The Tagua Hunters
About midnight, there's a plop followed by silence. A cabeza has fallen from a palm tree onto the floor of the rain forest. Nestled inside the cabeza-which resembles a coconut-are 8-10 tagua nuts. It is romantic-but not foolish-to say that inside the cabeza are also food, a roof for a house, electricity, opportunities to go to school, medical care, and more. How can this be? It happens like this. A tagua harvester spies the cabeza and adds it to others in the sling on his back. He carries the cabeza to his village and sets it in the sun to dry for a week, maybe a month. It depends. But the day comes when the hard outer shell is opened, and the tagua nuts removed. Some are carved into beads of many shapes and sizes. Some are dyed and others left their natural color. Soon, an artisan creates a necklace, a bracelet, or earrings which will eventually be displayed in a fair trade store somewhere in your community. You go shopping and purchase jewelry to wear to a party next Friday. And while you dance or dine, in a far away village that you will never visit, a family eats in a house with a roof and the children go to school every day.
