Miss Nelly, Hopewell School, Barut, Kenya
Nelly Multhai (aka Miss Nelly) says that over and over, every day . . . "Your learning-your education-can wipe out your poverty, can keep you honest." She states it matter-of-factly, no drama, no intensity, no honeyed persuasion, although she emphasizes the your. She says it to the 600-800 students at Hopewell School, the school she helped establish. The students never imagained that they would have a chance to go to school. It does not matter that half of the classrooms are tin sheds with dirt floors, open windows, one blackboard, a very short and carefully hoarded piece of chalk, no doors. For many students, the only clothes they own is the uniform the school provides. Most students are orphans. All are poor. And-at least for now-- they are survivors. Will they someday start businesses, run for office, raise families, be honest, refrain from violence? That is the hope.

Learning-education-can wipe out poverty and violence.
